The best ideas often begin where you least expect them.
Behind the Design is a new editorial series by Tallira (formerly The Rug Collection), exploring the inspiration, design thinking and craftsmanship behind our rugs. From the first sketch to the finished rug, we reveal how ideas evolve into pieces created for contemporary Australian interiors.
Our series begins with Cascade.
From Idea to Form
Some ideas arrive in an instant. Bringing them to life takes time.
For Cascade, early sketches became the foundation for a process of refinement, moving into Adobe Illustrator where proportion, rhythm and balance were carefully resolved. Every line was created, adjusted and simplified until the composition felt complete.
The transition from sketch to digital illustration allowed the design to evolve while preserving the strength of the original concept, resulting in a bold contemporary rug defined by geometry, texture and depth.
Inspired by architectural curves, Cascade balances sculptural form with tactile softness, creating a statement piece that feels equally at home in minimalist interiors as it does layered, expressive spaces.

Shaped Through Texture
Cascade is defined as much by texture as it is by pattern.
Handtufted using a combination of cut and loop pile, the varying heights create subtle dimension across the surface, allowing light to reveal the rug's depth throughout the day. Refined linear detailing appears gently carved into the wool, creating movement while celebrating the tactile beauty of natural fibres.
Available in a single colourway – Topaz - a rich golden cut pile is contrasted with a softer beige loop pile, allowing the interplay between the two textures to reveal the rug's sculptural form.
Every line has purpose. Every texture contributes to the whole.
Crafted in Pure New Zealand Wool
Handtufted from 100% New Zealand wool blend, Cascade combines natural softness with exceptional durability. The fibre is resilient, insulating and beautifully tactile - as practical for busy family homes as it is refined in appearance.
Designed for everyday living, Cascade is made to age beautifully alongside the homes it inhabits. It reflects how Tallira approaches design, finding inspiration in the world around us and transforming it into enduring rugs with lasting relevance.

Watch the Cascade rug evolve
Looking Ahead
Cascade marks the opening chapter of Behind the Design, a series that explores the thinking, craftsmanship and considered decisions behind the collections that define Tallira.
While the finished rug is often the part that receives the most attention, the journey to get there is equally important. Every collection begins with an idea that evolves through countless refinements, balancing creativity with technical expertise, material knowledge and an understanding of how people live with design every day.
Throughout the series, we'll take you beyond the finished product to reveal the process behind each collection. From the first concepts and hand sketches through to digital refinement, sampling, artisan craftsmanship and the final piece, every stage plays a role in shaping the character of a rug. It's a process of testing proportions, refining textures, adjusting colour palettes and perfecting construction until every detail feels resolved.
The series also offers a closer look at the people behind the collections. From our Australian design team to the skilled artisans who bring each piece to life by hand, every rug is the result of collaboration between creative vision and generations of craftsmanship. Traditional techniques remain at the heart of our process, interpreted through a contemporary design lens.
For interior designers, architects and design enthusiasts alike, Behind the Design offers an opportunity to have a better understanding of the intention behind each collection.
Rather than simply showcasing the finished result, it celebrates the journey, the thoughtful decisions and the enduring craftsmanship that give every Tallira rug its distinct identity.
Cascade is where the story begins. In the chapters ahead, we'll continue exploring the ideas, materials and makers behind ... collections that bring texture, warmth and lasting character to contemporary interiors.
