Behind the Design: Haven Rug

July 30, 2026

Every collection has its own design story.

For the Haven rug, it began with a single pencil line.

A contemporary interpretation of the timeless plaid pattern, Haven evolved from carefully measured pencil sketches, where pencil and ruler were used together to reimagine familiar intersecting bands through bold geometry and an architectural perspective before being developed digitally and ultimately handtufted by skilled artisans.

This edition of Behind the Design follows that creative evolution, offering a glimpse into the process behind Haven—from the first pencil sketch through to the finished piece.

From Pencil to Pattern

Every design starts differently.

For Haven, the earliest ideas were explored by hand.

Working with pencil and ruler, the composition evolved through steady refinement. Proportions were tested, the relationship between each geometric form refined, and the balance between positive and negative space carefully explored.

At this stage, nothing is final.

The focus wasn't on recreating a traditional plaid, but on reimagining its familiar structure through bold geometry and a distinctly contemporary lens.

Reinterpreting a classic plaid demands precision. The relationship between each intersecting band, the weight of every line and the balance of negative space all shape how the composition is experienced within a room. What looks resolved on paper must feel equally deliberate when translated into a large-scale rug.

Throughout the sketching process, those relationships were continually tested. Adjustments weren't made to add more detail, but to bring the pattern into sharper focus, allowing it to feel structured yet effortless.

It's this restraint that gives Haven its quiet confidence, finding its strength through proportion and balance rather than ornament.

From Sketch to Scale

Once the hand sketch captured the direction, the design moved into a digital environment where every element could be resolved with precision.

Line weights were refined, proportions adjusted and the relationship between each geometric form worked through in detail. Viewing the design digitally allowed every element to be assessed at scale before production began, ensuring the composition felt balanced from edge to edge.

This stage wasn't about changing the original idea, but preserving it.

Digital refinement preserves the character of the hand sketch while ensuring the design can be translated faithfully into a handcrafted rug. Each decision supports the next stage of the process, creating a clear blueprint for the artisans who bring the design to life.

From there, the design becomes a working document for production, carrying the integrity of the original concept from studio to loom.

Designing with Texture

A rug is experienced differently to almost any other piece within an interior.

It isn't simply viewed from across the room.

It's walked across every day. It softens a space underfoot. It changes with the light as the day unfolds.

For Haven, texture became an essential part of the design itself.

Handtufted from a premium New Zealand wool blend, the rug combines a plush cut pile with precision-carved detailing, allowing the geometric composition to become more sculptural. The carved lines create gentle shadow and definition, while the softness of the pile introduces warmth that offsets the strength of the pattern.

As natural light moves across the carved detailing, the varying pile heights create subtle highlights and shadow, giving the rug a sculptural presence throughout the day.

It's a reminder that the most successful rugs aren't defined by pattern alone.

Texture plays an equally important role in creating depth, atmosphere and comfort within a room.

Designed to Define a Space

Some rugs quietly complete a room. Others help define it.

Haven belongs firmly in the latter.

Its contemporary interpretation of plaid transforms a familiar pattern into a bold architectural statement. Strong geometry, layered colour and sculptural texture create a rug that naturally draws the eye, bringing rhythm and personality to contemporary interiors.

Whether styled with sculptural furniture or a restrained palette of natural finishes, Haven becomes a defining feature within the room, delivering visual impact while staying grounded and refined.

While the geometric composition remains constant, each colourway gives Haven its own distinct character.

Grove layers rich shades of olive, moss and forest green, bringing depth and an organic warmth that softens the architectural pattern.

Mariner offers a fresher interpretation, pairing layered teal tones with soft neutrals to highlight the rhythm of the design. The palette enhances the interplay of line, texture and negative space, creating a statement that feels refined and contemporary.

Twilight takes a bolder approach. Deep navy, rich burgundy, accents of blue and soft neutrals create a dramatic, expressive palette that amplifies Haven's graphic composition while retaining a sense of sophistication.

Together, the three colourways show how thoughtful colour choices can transform the character of the same design—whether creating a grounded, tranquil interior or a space with greater contrast and personality.

Designed to be lived with for years to come, Haven combines bold geometry with thoughtful craftsmanship, creating a statement piece that brings lasting character to contemporary interiors.

From Drawing Board to Handcrafted Rug

A well-resolved design is only one part of the story.

Bringing it to life requires the expertise of skilled artisans whose craftsmanship transforms a drawing into something tangible.

Every carved line must be executed with precision. Every transition between pile heights must feel seamless. Every detail contributes to the overall balance of the finished rug.

It's this combination of thoughtful design and handcrafted skill that gives Haven its distinctive presence.

The result is a rug that feels every bit as refined beneath your feet as it did on the drawing board.

Looking Beyond the Sketch

The finished rug is what ultimately finds its place within an interior.

But behind every collection are the moments that rarely get seen—pages of sketches, countless refinements and the decisions that shape the final design long before production begins.

Through Behind the Design, we're opening the studio door a little wider, sharing the creative thinking and craftsmanship behind the collections that define Tallira.

For Haven, it all started with a single pencil line.

Everything that followed was about shaping that idea into a handcrafted rug designed to be lived with for years to come.
