Describe your style in 3 words?

Approachable, timeless & refined.

When & what made you start Emma Blomfield Studio?

I started my studio aged 24, I knew barely anything looking back in hindsight but I’m so glad I did it when I was so young or maybe I never would have done it.

I started the business wanting to help make interior design more affordable and attainable to the next generation that were starting to create their first homes.

Our services have evolved and grown with our client base over the past decade+ to be more refined and sophisticated over the years and we have created so many amazing homes, events & and commercial spaces we are so proud of today.

What are your top style tips to make a space feel inviting, unique and inspiring?

I love to incorporate some elements into the interior design style that has a nod to the personalities and character of the people who live in the home. Whether that’s mementos from their travels, heirlooms from loved ones or gifts they’ve been given from a partner that are meaningful and sentimental. Each of those pieces helps tell a story too. Who doesn’t love walking into someone’s home and sparking up a conversation about a cute little figurine sitting on their fireplace mantel that they found on holiday in Greece..?!

The other element that helps make a space more inviting is with clever furniture placement that helps promote conversation, comfort and ease of traffic flow around the room.

What’s the one piece of advice you would tell your younger self?

The things that worry you now, won’t worry you or will worry you a lot less later in life. Focus on the things you can control and stay in your own lane, don’t worry about what other people think you should be doing - you’ll do it your own way and do it better anyway.

What’s your favourite part of any project?

The beginning and the end of the project are my favourite bits.

Talking to clients about the potential and dreaming up all the fabulous concepts are the super fun part in the early stages.

Then coming back to style the finished home for the photoshoot and seeing all your hardwork come to life and being enjoyed by clients is the best part.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

We work with a wide variety of people in a year and sometimes there’s not just one decision-maker, sometimes it’s multiple. This means multiple opinions to take onboard and sometimes they differ so trying to find a way forward with the process can be difficult if you can’t come to a mutually agreeable solution. We often joke that we should have studied marriage counselling to help couples make better decisions on their homes.

You also come up against a variety of challenges with any build or decorating project from budget constraints to discovering there’s a structural issue that then takes away from the decorative budget.

If you could style anyone’s home, who’s would it be?

She’s not a real person but I’d love to style Charlotte York’s house from Sex & The City. Designing a New York apartment would be so much fun!

What’s your go-to rug?

The Diva Lillypad rug – we’ve used it so many times in our projects and can’t get enough of it!

Any key pieces, trends or colour palettes you are loving at the moment?

I’ve just finished renovating my own art deco apartment on Sydney’s lower north shore. I have fallen head over heels in love with the Art Deco trend and am itching to do more of them!

What inspires you?

Travel is my number one inspiration. I find inspiration in the architecture of so many cities in the world, especially in cities full of history and heritage. Discovering other cultures and their way of life often gives me ideas about how we can incorporate similar elements into our clients homes.

What’s your biggest design no-no?

Polyester inserts in cushions. I can’t do it. They have to be feather to make the cushion look more luxurious and plump!

What couldn’t you do without when creating a space?

Texture. You can design a whole home in a very neutral colour palette without having much injection of colour but unless you layer different textures together in the space it’ll look really flat and boring. Some of my favourite textures are things like grasscloth wallpapers, linen bedding, woollen rugs, heavy slubby linen slipcover sofas, silk lampshades etc.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

To fly, I’d go and visit different cities every time I needed inspiration on a certain job!

What’s on your design wish list at the moment?

I want to grow my art collection so am looking into investing in some original art from a few artists I admire.
